Welcome to the 2009/10 Journey
Bilbo used to often say there was only one road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary. “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,” he used to say. “You step into the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off into.”
Parents: And so as Frodo began his journey with these words, we too begin our journey for the year. The Quest is not a Fellowship whose mission it is to destroy and object of evil, but a Fellowship of friendship, relationship and living the faith that will help teens on their journey towards the ultimate goal we all seek – Sainthood. As Christians, we all walk on the same journey, the same pilgrimage. In the words of the Catechism of the Church, “Death is the end of man’s earthly pilgrimage.” Our Quest is to live our lives fully, in a manner befitting the Faith left us by Jesus, and so to earn the right to end our Quest not in an earthly death, but a Heavenly life.
Teens: What did I say up there? Oh, yea. Live life to its fullest, with a smile on your face and love in your heart. It’s not that hard, really. This isn’t a call to reckless living, or a life that harms you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. If you strip away the fire and brimstone, Jesus was a fun guy. A really smart guy, but fun. He would rather hang with kids than the “professors” of the time. His friends were not exactly non-fat latte, extra shot, light-foam types. They ate with their (dirty) hands, smelled like fish, rarely bathed, but they all had one thing in common (except that Judas guy). They all loved Jesus even when they didn’t get him. And they enjoyed hanging out. Think about it. That’s all they ever did. They hung out together, listed to His stories, walked from town to town talking to people about why they like this Jesus guy. So it’s not really all that bad trying to be like Him. Hopefully we won’t have to give our lives or anything, but we can love our neighbor as ourselves and love God totally. That’s it. Two rules. So what are you waiting for? Just do it.
